Antrim South East Electoral Area

Again a largely rural DEA, stretching across the South Antrim countryside from just outside Glenavy to just outside Kells (apr. 20 miles). The rural area is almost solidly Protestant and almost as solid UUP! The two major population centres are Crumlin and Templepatrick. Both are growing very rapidly and becoming part of middle-class Belfast exurbia. Crumlin (70% Catholic) has about 20% of the electroate, Templepatrick (90% Protestant), around 10%. 30% of the electorate is in several working class housing estates on the edge of Antim Town. The ward is very prosperous by NI standards, with the exception of the (loyalist) Ballycraigy and (nationalist) Rathenraw estates mentioned above, which have some of the worst reputations for drug related crime in NI.

In 1993 the ward returned 3 UUP,1 IndU, 1 DUP, 1 Alliance and 1 SDLP councillor. The Independent Unionist (Thompson) has since joined the UUP.

Interestingly, most of the candidates had their jobs on the ballot paper - Burns is a Company Director, Harkness a Retired Farmer, as is Wallace, Stinson a Retird Surgeon, Swann a Dairy Farmer, Thompson a Farmer (plain and simple), and last but not least, Rea is a (I kid you not) Self-Employed Pig Specialist (yes, even with that on the ballot paper 716 people voted for him!)
